August 20, 2016 is the second anniversary of our beloved Guruji, Sri.B.K.S. Iyengar’s passing away. In memory of Guruji, Yogacharya Sri. B.K.S. Iyengar, Vaayu Yoga Shala is planning an event on August 28, 2016 to keep his teachings in our hearts and thoughts with reverence.
Even though Guruji’s body has merged with the five elements of the universe, his presence remains with us forever. He is alive with us in his teachings, writings, videos and films. We will have Guruji in our memory always. Reading his books and watching his video clips or movies are inspirational and transformative.
I was not fortunate to be Guruji’s direct student, but fortunate to watch his yoga practice and get inspired and transformed. I had the opportunity of studying and meeting him at RIMYI (Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute), Pune, India, in 2012. I observed his practice, his teaching to his grand daughter Abijata Sridhar, and his guidance to Abijata while she was teaching. I also had the privilege of conversing with him in Kannada, which is my mother tongue, as well as of Guruji and also practiced yoga in his presence in the yoga practice hall at RIMYI. All that brought immense knowledge and transformation in me. I still treasure those precious moments. I also often hear about Guruji’s teachings, his humor, toughness, and precision and so on from my Guru, Patricia Walden, Boston, MA, who studied closely with Guruji for about 40 years. All of these make his presence more vital and vivid for me. As a result Guruji is always here to guide me to continue my journey on the divine path. This reminds me of Guruji’s daughter, Dr. Geeta Iyengar’s words during Yoganusasanam 2014 Convention. Another jewel in the string of my memory. Geetaji, while reminiscing Guruji’s teachings said“For the next generation, it is our responsibility to remain on the divine path as shown by [the] intensity of [his] practice and depth of understanding of yoga.”
Vaayu Yoga Shala is sharing that responsibility to remain on the divine path as shown by our beloved Guruji, and continue its effort in disseminating the teachings of Guruji.
